資優兒教育培訓計劃 – EPGY Courses at Opus Academy

Through the EPGY program, students have access to courses in a variety of subjects at levels ranging from kindergarten through advanced placement. The main emphasis is on nurturing student’s conceptual thinking, logical, analytical and problem-solving skills.

Elementary Level Courses

K-7 Mathematics: M00A K-2, M00B 3-4, M00C 5-6, and M00D 7
This sequence provides a rigorous and complete mathematics curriculum at the elementary school level with a strong emphasis in conceptual geometry and mathematical foundations. Students progress in areas of simple arithmetic, fractions, decimals, sets, measurement, graphs, functions, geometry and pre-algebra. The program begins at the kindergarten level and progresses to the end of pre-algebra. Students should enroll at the beginning of their current school grade level.

Secondary Level Courses

M011 Beginning Algebra
The first year of high-school algebra, including the real number system, equations and inequalities, polynomials and exponents, factoring and applications, rational expressions, graphing linear equations, linear systems, roots and radicals and quadratic equations.

M012 Intermediate Algebra
The second year of high-school algebra, including the intermediate levels of linear equations and inequalities, exponents and polynomials, rational expressions, roots and radicals, quadratic equations and inequalities, the straight line, systems of linear equations, quadratic functions, inverse exponential and logarithmic functions, sequences and series.

M013 Pre-calculus
Topics in algebra, trigonometry, analytic geometry and other mathematical areas necessary to complete an in-depth study of the material generally presented in secondary school mathematics. It provides the foundational material necessary for the calculus.

M015 Honors Geometry
An expanded version of a traditional High School Geometry Course with an emphasis on the axiomatic approach. Covers logic, synthetic geometry, analytic geometry and transformational geometry.

Advanced Placement Course

M040 Calculus A
An introduction to the differential calculus. Topics: limits and continuity, derivatives and differentiability, applications of the derivative, curve sketching, related rates, and implicit differentiation.

M041 Calculus B
An introduction to the integral calculus. Topics: parametric equations, Riemann sums, indefinite and definite integrals, techniques of integration and applications of the integral. Prepares students to take the Calculus AB Advanced Placement Exam.

M042 Calculus C
Further topics in differential and integral calculus. Topics: formal development of limits and derivatives, advanced techniques and applications of integration, power series, and simple differential equations. Prepares students to take the Calculus BC Advanced Placement Exam.

Elementary Level Courses

Language Arts & Writing 2, 3, 4, 5, 6
The Language Arts and Writing course is intended for students who are reading at the second grade level, but not yet at the seventh-grade level.

The Language Arts and Writing course provides students with a systematic presentation of the essential elements of English grammar and mechanics, focusing on grammatical concepts, language conventions, and sentence-level writing. The content of Language Arts and Writing is divided into six curriculum strands: Parts of Speech, Sentence Structure, Sentence Composition, Paragraphs, Word Origins and Literary Elements.

• Parts of Speech – develops understanding of the grammatical categories of English
Sentence Structure – develops understanding of the properties of English sentence structure and written language conventions
Sentence Composition – provides guided sentence writing practice using the parts of speech and concepts covered in the other two strands

Paragraphs – introduces students to paragraph structure and effective writing for different types of paragraphs

Word Origins – introduces students to concepts of etymology, including prefixes, suffixes, and word roots

Literary Elements – introduces students to plot structure, setting, mood, and figurative language

Reading and Writing about Literature

Designed for gifted students who are reading at a third through sixth grade level, the Reading and Writing about Literature course develops students’ abilities to read critically and to think about what they have read. Using literature from around the globe and from a variety of genres, the course presents students with exercises designed to increase their comprehension, fluency, and vocabulary skills, as well as develop stronger analytical thinking skills. These exercises have been carefully designed for each book to assess and monitor students’ ability to understand and retain what they have read. The exercises use many presentation formats to assess a student’s literacy skills in areas such as vocabulary, word analysis, literal and inferential comprehension, and higher-level thinking.

For many books, students will also practice their writing skills by composing responses based on a series of questions designed to help students think about what they have read. The books in the course span grade levels from three through eight and are suitable for gifted students as young as six years old.

Secondary Level Courses

EG20 Grammar and Style of the Sentence
This is a self-paced grammar courses designed to help 7th to 12th grade students understand the grammar of the sentence and make stylistic choices informed by their knowledge of grammar. Topics include effective subject and verb choice, active and passive voice, clause coordination and subordination, sentence fragments, comma splices and run-together sentences, and phrasal modifiers (including verbal constructions or finite verbs).

Secondary Level Courses

P10A, P10B, P10C Elementary Physics
This sequence of three courses gives students a firm understanding of the principles and concepts of physics. Topics: mechanics, wave motion, sound, thermodynamics, electricity and magnetism, optics, relativity, and some highlights of modern physics. Prerequisite: completion of first half of M011 or equivalent. This sequence prepares students to take the Physics B Advanced Placement Exam.

Advanced Placement Course

P051 Physics C: Mechanics
An introductory calculus-based course in mechanics. Topics: kinematics, vectors, Newton ‘s laws, work and energy principles, rotational dynamics, gravitation, and simple harmonic motion. Prepares students to take the Physics C: Mechanics AP exam. Co-requisite M040 or equivalent.

P053 Physics C: Electricity and Magnetism
An introductory calculus-based course in electricity and magnetism. Topics: electric fields and potentials, circuits, magnetism, magnetic induction and AC circuits. Prepares students to take the Physics C: Electricity and Magnetism Advanced Placement Exam. Prerequisite M041 or equivalent.

C11A Introduction to C Programming,
C11B Programming in C – Algorithms and Techniques,
C11C Compound Data Types and Advanced Topics in C
A sequence providing hands-on, in-depth, programming-intensive introduction to computer science and the C programming language. Topics: data types, control statements, algorithms, program design, arrays, user-defined types, recursion, pointers, files, records, dynamic lists, trees, recursive data structures, and graphics. No prior experience is assumed.

C015 Introduction to Java
This course introduces students to the concept of object oriented programming. Topics: basic and advanced features of Java as well as object-oriented design, designing and building applications such as web applets. Prerequisites: a course in C or C++.

2. Fill out and submit the paper application with application fee. For most courses, you should do this at least two weeks prior to when you would like to start your course.

3. Submit supporting test scores. Students between the ages of 7-13 who will be taking a math, physics or computer programming course, must take the EPGY Mathematical Aptitude test at Opus Academy.

4. You will be ready to start the course on the specified start date, once admitted, and your registration form and payment have been received.

Deadlines to Apply

Admission to Opus Academy is handled on a rolling and term basis throughout the year depending on the course. We require that you submit a complete application, including test scores. Be certain to review the application materials required before you apply. Once admitted, students may begin courses at any time.


Opus Enhancement
For the Language Arts and Writing (L.A.W.) and the Grammar and Style (EG20) course, Opus enhancement activities include critical reading, thinking and writing through literature studies, oral discussion and writing support.

For the Math courses, Opus enhancement activities include more problem solving to address the curricular differences with the B.C. curriculum.
